Finding Joy in the Hustle and Bustle of Life
How can we find joy midst the craziness of life? Does the thought of adding one more thing to your schedule overwhelm you?
Life is hectic. We hit the ground running most mornings. We gulp a bowl of cereal, rush to work, scurry to pick up the kids, scramble to prepare dinner, squeeze in a workout, finish the errands and housework, and collapse into bed.
How do I juggle all the spinning plates? I desire to be joyful, but I am tired and stressed. The idea of one more responsibility puts me close to the edge.
Jesus records the answer in Luke 10. He challenges us to center our lives on loving Him and our neighbors. As we choose to obey, joy with follow.
A man journeyed from Jerusalem to Jericho. Some bandits attacked him, robbed him, and left him to die. As he bled on the road, a priest, a Levite, and a Samaritan passed by. They all saw him, but only one stopped to help.
Why only one? What hindered the others? What tugged on their hearts as more important?
Fear of being robbed themselves, ruining their fancy clothes, missing their appointments, spending too much money, or maybe receiving no recognition for their good deed…
Even though it was inconvenient, messy, and expensive, the Samaritan cancelled his plans and cared for the no-name stranger. He felt compassion and rescheduled his day. He loved.
Would I have stopped? Or is my day jam-packed with my plans? I make time for what I value. Does my agenda focus on Christ and others?
Lord, please help me priorities the best things.
1. Carve out time with Jesus first. (Matthew 6:33)
2. Compassion for others to listen, lighten their load, and laugh together. (Matt. 22:39)
3. Commit to doing things God’s way (John 15:10-11)
JESUS first + OTHERS second + You last = JOY today.
