Counting Crocodiles

Shutting the van off, my kids hopped out and hurried to the riverbank. The trees waved from the gentle breeze, while the robins chirped. I sighed and relaxed as the sun warmed my face and arms.

My kids tossed rocks into the river and teased each other.

"I threw it farther than you."

"No, my rock was farther."

"Not uhhh!"

Then my youngest shouted, "Stop! I see a crocodile!"

Everyone paused and looked.

"No, sweetie, that is a log," I said.

"No, mom. It has a long tail, and it's eyes are looking at me!" my son disagreed.

Chuckling, I explained that Iowa doesn't have crocodiles in its rivers, that was only in Africa. But unconvinced my son kept his eyes peeled for more!

After living overseas, my family had some adjusting to do.

What circumstance is God allowing in your life that you are adjusting too?

Job relocation to a new state, death of a loved one,

retirement, kids leaving home,

diagnoses of cancer, aftermath of a divorce, loss of your home,

adoption, deployment...

Change is hard. It requires different routines and shoves us out of our comfort zones. We long for stability, but the unpredictability of life slaps us in the face.

We look to past blessings and miss the current ones.

During the day we struggle with the new reality, while at night we toss and turn.

Will it ever feel normal again?

As our circumstances change, God remains the same.

God is eternal and immutable. He never grows weary or worried.

No situation shocks Him because nothing is impossible for Him.

His mercies are new every morning. His love never fails, and his faithfulness endures.

He is the same yesterday, day, and forever. Our God is constant.

"In the beginning you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands. They will perish, but you remain;

they will all wear out like a garment.

Like clothing you will change them and they will be discarded.

But you remain the same, and your years will never end." Psalm 102:25-27 NIV

Circumstances change, but God remains the same.

When our situations change, what are we going to do? Are we going to look around? Or are we going to look up and lean on our constant God?

Just as our family had to adjust back to American culture, we can adjust to our new situations with God's help.

Lord, grant us grace to lift our eyes above your circumstances and gaze at Your majesty. Help us to rest in Your unchanging love, mercy, and faithfulness. Help us to remember that You remain the same.
