Are you drifting or paddling?
Recently, my husband and I snuck away for a date to go canoeing on the lake.
As we rowed on the quiet lake, sea gulls squawked and swooped for fish. Trees surrounded the lake and whispered, "breathe." I sighed and relaxed in the cool evening.
Our canoe glided straight through the water as long as we paddled. But as soon as we stopped, the current pulled our boat toward the shore.
The same is true in life. We sail straight ahead when we prioritize our relationship with God. But when we neglect our relationship with God, we drift along and miss opportunities.
Life is busy!
With kids starting school and sports filling our weekends, our crammed-packed schedules squeeze God out. Are we drifting or rowing toward God?
Paddling against entertainment, exhaustion, and busyness is not easy, but our relationship with God is worth it. Just as my husband and I value our date nights, we must prioritize our time with the Lord.
"O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water." Psalm 63:1 ESV
Three ways to prioritize our time with God.
1. Seek God first in the morning. Have a Bible verse on your bathroom mirror or listen to the Bible while you get ready. Read your Bible while you sip your coffee or tea.
2. Schedule God moments throughout the day. Pray or listen to music on the way to work. Read your Bible over your lunch break. Have a verse by your work station or in your purse.
3. Skip technology and soak in His Word. Rather than cruise Facebook, memorize a verse. Rather than check Twitter, pray.
Lord, please help me to prioritize my relationship with You by seeking You first. Help me not to just drift through life, but paddle forward for what counts for eternity.
